What a great week this past week has been. Lake Okeechobee is still high and dirty in places, but the Bass fishing has been fantastic. I fished both the north-end of Lake Okeechobee and south-end of Lake Okeechobee this past week, and I found bass in both areas, but the fishing down on the south end of Lake Okeechobee was far better than up on the north shore, for me at least. The only good water I was able to find on the north shore was in Fisheating Bay. There is a lot of hydrilla, and floating mats, and the water isn't too bad. We were shiner fishing and caught several fish. We were in the same area that I had been a couple of days earlier, using artificial baits. The watermelon fluke was the best for me.

I went down south on Sat & Sunday, I never like to like numbers of fish, but on Saturday, my friend and I stopped counting at 50, and we had one fish that was 5 pounds 13 ounces. The fish we were on were in the holes of the pepper grass, and they watermelon/red fluke was far and away the best bait. I did catch a few on a watermelon/gold lizard with a 1/8 ounce weight, and also on a watermelon fluke that I dyed the tail red on when I ran out of the others.

On Sunday, we went right back to the same area, and the result was pretty much the same, with the exception of the wind was blowing pretty hard, and the fish moved to the outside edges. It was too windy for the slow presentation of the fluke, so we switched to spinnerbaits. They tore them up! I was using a 3/8 ounce gold blade/white skirt, with a chartreuse trailer, and my friend was using a 1/2 ounce with a silver blade white/chartreuse skirt. We both had similar luck with the fish. We didn't get any really large fish, 3 1/2 pounds was the biggest, but we went non stop until we left at around 12:30. My friends biggest complaint was that his thumbs were sore from taking fish off the hook. What a great complaint to have.

I have heard that there is some good crappie action up on the north shore out of Harney Pond. The folks are using a combination of minnows and jigs, and are fishing the same hydrilla mats as the bass fishermen.

Hope to see you out fishing.
