Central Florida's Lake Okeechobee Bass Fishing Report |
November 20, 2004
|
March 2005 |
Fishing has been great for the last month. The
lake is still very muddy in most areas but there are some areas behind or
close to the grass line that are dingy to clear. If you can see a
spinnerbait one foot below the surface, the area should be fishable. These
areas are holding lots of fish. The fish have been schooling for several
weeks and can still be found in select areas. The schooling fish can be
caught on spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, shallow running crankbaits, and
soft plastics. It has been no problem to catch 50 to 75 fish per day when
you find the "spot" where the schoolers are feeding on shad. Big fish are staging off the grass line preparing for the spawn which will begin around the full moon in December. Big fish are being caught on spinnerbaits and flipping around scattered patches of grass in "clear" open water areas. Some big fish can be caught in open areas around patches of hydrilla and reeds inside the heavy grass line. Shiners are best for catching big fish in the colored water areas. The key to catching fish is to find clear water and keeping up with the fish when the wind direction changes and moves the mud line. The water color and the fish will move overnight with the 20 to 25 mph winds we have had over the last two weeks. Pro Tip of the Month When looking for schooling bass keep an eye out and an ear open for fish breaking on top of the water. The bait fish will jump out of the water to get away form the feeding bass. The bass will jump out of the water trying to catch the shad making a lot of noise and commotion on the water's surface. Also watch for birds circling and dipping into the water where bass are feeding on shad. I have found fish a mile away by watching birds dipping into the water, showing me where the bass were feeding. So if you are planning a Florida Fishing trip or Lake Okeechobee Guided fishing charter and would like more info on fishing lake Okeechobee please give me a call or e-mail. Scott R.
